Tomorrow I’ll be riding my bike over 100 miles from Portland to Pacific City on the Oregon Coast, as part of the annual event, Reach the Beach.
Someone asked me if finishing a century (100 mile bike ride) has been a lifelong dream of mine. The answer surprised them.
No.
No. You know why? It never occurred to me.
It never occurred to me that I could do it, that it could even be possible for me. It’s the same with climbing a mountain or running a half marathon.
I started trying things I thought I couldn’t do, or wouldn’t enjoy, and guess what? Yes, I surprised myself. Not only could I do them, I loved doing them.
What else haven’t I even considered because it didn’t seem possible?
What about you?
Oh, and feel free to wish me luck. I’m going to need it.
YAY YOU! Wow. How exciting. Good luck!
“I started trying things I thought I couldn’t do, or wouldn’t enjoy,…”
Wow is right! My brain is just flying with this. Thanks Shannon.
Good Luck.
Meanwhile, lots to think about…. :)
Congrats on the ride, Shannon!
Reading your post reminded me of a conversation I had with my husband this past weekend. We were talking about neighborhoods and real estate prices, and I mentioned that back in my twenties, I assumed I would never own my own home. I’d never ever have the means to do that — it was out of the question.
Fast forward and I’ve been a homeowner twice, and now the renter of a wonderful apartment by choice.
So the convergence of your post and that conversation has me wondering — what else do I think will never be within reach?
Thanks for this — xo

[…] Stolen Bike. I know things get stolen all of the time. And yet, I still just can’t believe that people think that somehow it’s okay to take something that belongs to someone else. On Sunday, I rode my bike down to the Portland Marathon. But when I finished and went to ride home, it was gone. The lock, everything gone. As if it had never been there. It was so disappointing! I loved that bike. I put some serious miles on it over the last five years, including riding it over 100 miles from Portland to the Coast. […]
